Pune is a city located in the Indian state of Maharashtra, in the Deccan plateau that is placed between the Mula and Mutha rivers, in the west region of the country. With over three million inhabitants the city is the second most populous in the state after Mumbai and the ninth in the country, and is recognized for its historical significance in the history of the region. Established as a city in 847 AD, and originally known by the name of Punawadi, emerged as the center of the powerful Maratha Empire nearly a thousand years later, and now has become an important cultural center of the country.

As the cultural center of Maharashtra, Pune is a major tourism destination in the area, and has great attractions for the thousands of visitors who come here each year. Among its main attractions are valuable museums as Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum, Darshan Museum, Tribal Museum, Mahatma Phule Museum or the National War Museum, wonderful architectural works as the palaces of Shaniwar Wada, Aga Khan and Vishrambaug Wada or Sinhagad and Khadakwasala Fort, religious buildings like the Saras Baug Temple, the Parvati Hill Temples, the Katraj Jain Temple or the Chatushrungi Mata Temple, and natural spaces as Pataleshwar Caves, the Bund Garden or Bhimshankar Wildlife Sanctuary.

Pune also has a traditional cuisine which highlights the use of ingredients such as millet and sorghum, and some of its typical dishes are the variety of bread Puran Poli, the vegetarian dish Pithla Bhakri and the snack called Bhelpuri. Among the most important economic activities of the city are tourism and industries in the manufacturing, automotive and IT sectors.
