Information about Delhi (State)

The National Capital Territory of Delhi is a state of India situated in the north of the country, on the banks of river Yamuna, and includes in its territory the national capital city of New Delhi. With a current population of more than 22 million inhabitants, it is believed that the region was inhabited since the 6th century BC, serving as the capital of several empires and suffering numerous destructions and reconstructions throughout the years. It became part of the British Empire in 1857 and was for many years the center of British goverment in India until its independence in 1947.

The state is a paradise for tourism, as it can be found in its territory more than 1,000 historic buildings and nearly 200 monuments and sites of national interest. These include architectural wonders like the Red Fort, the Qutab Minar and the Humayun's Tomb, three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and other monuments like the India Gate, the Jantar Mantar observatory and the Purana Qila fortress. Among the religious buildings stands out the Jama Masjid Mosque and the temples of Laxminarayan, Akshardham, Bahรก'รญ Lotus and ISKCON with its modern architecture, while also can be found great examples of British colonial architecture as the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the Secretariat Building, the Rajpath boulevard and the Parliament of India.

As a region with centuries of history, a great variety of Indian and international cuisines are mixed every day in Delhi, creating an unique style that has conquered the world with dishes such as kebab, biryani or tandoori. Others traditional dishes of the state are the aloo chaat, the dahi vada and the jalebi. Considered the commercial capital of northern India, the main economic activities in Delhi are related to the tertiary sector, with particular emphasis on industries such as information technology, retail, hotels, banking, tourism and media.
