Chennai is an Indian city capital of the state of Tamil Nadu which is situated in the southern part of the country, on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal. With nearly five million inhabitants is the sixth most populous city in the country, and is recognized as an important cultural, commercial, and educational centre. Its territory was occupied by different empires in the past, and the city itself was born around 1639 under the name of Chennapattanam after the construction of Fort St. George by the British Empire. Later the metropolis would be known throughout the world as an important naval port under the name of Madras.

With a wide variety of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes, their traditional food includes idli or dosa for breakfast, a variety of ingredients such as sambar, kootu, chutney and curry served with steamed rice for lunch accompanied by pickles and salads, and onion pakoda and murukku, among others, for dinner.
