Chennai is an Indian city capital of the state of Tamil Nadu which is situated in the southern part of the country, on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal. With nearly five million inhabitants is the sixth most populous city in the country, and is recognized as an important cultural, commercial, and educational centre. Its territory was occupied by different empires in the past, and the city itself was born around 1639 under the name of Chennapattanam after the construction of Fort St. George by the British Empire.
