Coimbatore is an Indian city located in the state of Tamil Nadu, south of the country, on the banks of the Noyyal River and surrounded by the mountains of the Western Ghats. Recognized as one of the fastest growing cities and textile capital of the country, it is also an important commercial, educational and industrial center. Its current population reaches two million inhabitants, making it the second largest city in the state. Historically the region was controlled by various dynasties and empires among which are the Chera Dynasty, the Vijayanagara Empire and the Kingdom of Mysore.

The Coimbatore cuisine is characteristic of southern India and is based on rice, but also has the influence of the northern Indian and Chinese cuisine. Among its traditional dishes are Mysorepa, Halwa, Vada-sambar and Biryani. The main economic activities of the city are related to the textile and engineering industries, while are also important industries as diverse as those of hosiery, poultry and software.
